About "monosnaps"
Eddie Mallin is a photographer from Dublin now based in Kildare working exclusively in monochrome photography . Images recorded are film based and he favours the creation of fibre based photographic prints in a traditional wet darkroom. Prints are finished to archival standards which includes toning in most cases. Various toners also enhance the mood of an image and may change its contrast slightly, giving a unique glow to the print. No printing plans or notes are kept so each print is unique and strictly limited in number.
The Photography on this site is diverse and includes a sideways view of Ireland and Irishness through the Croagh Patrick images made over a number of years in extreme weather conditions. The photographs are graphic, and coarse film grain is used to show the harshness of the climb. The images also explore the rough terrain and the wonderful characters who do this annual climb.
A recent portfolio of Toy Camera images will intrigue also I hope. The Toy Camera a piece of cheap plastic from China, Familiar knobs and buttons will be missing from these cameras. The lens is plastic and there is no auto focus facility and most of us toy photographers will have scant regard for an in focus image anyway. Viewfinders will nearly always be misaligned which does not matter as we don't often use them. We wrap them in gaffer tape to minimise lighleaks and ensure the film does not fall out. What we like about them is they produce gorgeous pictures with great simplicity. Images of quality that can often be surprising and unexpected. Images that are dreamy often stark and occasionally surreal. The darkening around the edges is know as vignetting a common trait I like to exploit in my toy camera photographs. Other galleries include Irish landscapes and a selection of gritty portraits including a special section live music from an old archive of 80's concerts in Dublin. These photographs are rare and sadly many of the artists have passed on.
